4 out of 5 stars Well designed, lightweight, great fit, top sound   April 10, 2008

I previously owned the Shure E3c earphones but didn't get on with them at all. Bass was really really weak, and found them very uncomfortable and intrusive.

Took a risk and bought the Sennheiser CX 500's and was blown away.
The sound, especially bass, is really good (I actually had to turn the bass down on my ipod eq to listen to rock/metal - but would be superb for dance etc.)

They fit really well, just sit inside the ears, no need to squeeze them in until they're almost touching your brain. Just pop them in to get a good seal.
They are also extremely lightweight(earphones and the cable) which means you hardly feel them, and also they stay in your ears.

The high range doesn't quite match the E3C's with their 'microdriver technology' , symbols, high pitch guitar solos etc. just aren't as rich and full (hence only 4*'s), but the quality bass really does improve the overall sound. I guess it depends what you are listening to.

Fantastic price on amazon as well. Checked the highstreet, and the CX300 (2 models down) were retailing for almost the same (couldn't find CX500's anywhere)

The volume control is handy, its just a little plastic slider but does the job and saves you reaching for your mp3 player.
Also comes with a nice cable tidy and carry bag.

all in all a great deal, comfertable good sound - would highly recommend.

like the Sennheiser CX300 the cable is still to short
but the sound is fantastic a big improvement on earlier models also the cable is now rubberized so there is not the problem of that horrible feedback , they feel well made and look great and come with a bag a winder thingy :-)

would give 5 stars if the cable was a little longer but maybe im the only one who thinks that

5 out of 5 stars Great Headphones - Exactly What I Was After   January 14, 2009

I have been looking for a new set of headphones ever since i got my new Zen mp3 player. Had a set of MX500's previously and was astounded at the difference between them and that standard headphones. That made me want another set of Sennheisers and i spotted the CX500's.

After reading a few reviews about the noise being tinny and quiet i was slightly dubious but the more i researched these headphones the more i found out about the shaped rubber bits for fitting in your ear being crucial for a good sound.

I plumped for them in the end and i am really pleased with them. The standard rubber bits were spot on for my ears but i tried the rest to make sure there wasn't a better fitting shape. Just got to push them that little bit further into your ear than non noise cancelling ones. It feels a bit like wearing the foam style ear plug which i have done through my job. It feels a bit wierd initially but they become comfortable within a minute or so and then you hardly notice them.

The sound quality is tremendous, even compared to my MX500's. So much clearer and crisper. Bass is amazing, i previously had the bass boost enabled on my Zen with the MX500's but had to turn it off as it was overkill with the CX500's. Everything is just clearer and you dont need the volume up as high to achieve a great sound but i put most of that down to teh noise cancelling design of them.

Overall a brilliant set of headphones. I haven't heard anything better and i'd imagine you would have to spend a fair whack to beat these! Considering their size, price and sound they produce i dont think you could beat them for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable - question of authenticity?   October 7, 2008

This earphones are simply amazing for £20... [Not from Amazon, from an independent seller operating through Amazon]
Much better quality than my CX300's in every way but sound quality; theyre simply on a par - neither better or worse.
When i recieved them through the post, i was a little concerned that the packaging didnt seem as high quality as when i recieved my 300's - it was a little splintered around the 'shelve-hook' - something im aware to look for in rip-off copies, however i trusted the 99% positive feedback of the seller and delved a little deeper...
Either these are fantastically high quality fakes, or theyre actually the real thing - just with no noticable improvement in sound over the CX300's...
Still, well recommended... perfect fit with the provided tips, and the volume control is really useful - a certainly welcomed addition, along with the symetrical design.
Some complain about the short cable, but for me it's just that little bit too long... about the same length of the old-style ipod buds, meaning i have to coil it around my ipod when putting it in my pocket.
A minor niggle, and underwelming S/Q - hence only 4*s
