5 out of 5 stars Fantastic sounding 'buds   May 23, 2008

Felt compelled to write a review of these earphones even though I bought them from another web site. Before buying the SE310s I researched as many websites as I could find about them, comparing them against similar earphones from other manufacturers in this price/quality range. I primarily use a Creative ZEN Vision:M with a pair of £30 Sony earbuds that are now suffering from years of use (the mid-range has completely gone). The difference in reproduction quality with the new SE310s is astounding.

Why did I chose to buy these over other earphones.

1. The sound from these earphones is, as near as I can tell, exactly the same as the original CD recording. I've had to re-record my MP3 collection using the highest bit rates (320kbps) possible to get the best from the music and SE310s. I've found that with these earphones it is easy to tell the difference in bit rates (and I'm no audiophile).

2. Many reviews I've seen have mentioned the lack of bass. All I can say is if you want earphones that offer loads of bass, then buy earphones that will. The SE310s try and replicate the recording (in my case CD or MP3) as faithfully and accurately as possible without adding any bass, effects or colouration. I am a big listener of classical music and I'm having to listen to my collection all over again because it now sounds like I'm sat in amongst the orchestra instead of being in the audience. Each rustle of sheet music, each creak of a chair, if it's picked up by the microphones during the recording it will be heard with these earphones. I'm finding there are other sections of the orchestra playing that I've never heard before which have been hidden with other earphones.

I also feel I have to mention that I chose the SE310s over the SE110s and SE210s because they offer more across the audio range (see Shure website tech specs).

To summarise, if you want the best accuracy and quality without any added bass, or colouration, I could not ask for better at this price range.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - just persist with the fit!   January 28, 2008

Opinion about sound insulating earphones seems to be incredibly polarised - the Shure SE310s being no exception. However I will say here and now that my personal experience is that these phones are truly amazing and well exceeded my expectations. A natural sound across the range with crisp treble and a solid, natural bass put them in the same league as my home-use Sennheiser HD600s that cost over twice the price of the Shures.
Before buying, though, what needs to be understood is that this type of earphone is a completely different concept to what you may be used to, and that a correct fit in the ear canal is VITAL to getting the best out of them. You should find the right size and shape of adapter amongst the variety that come with the SE310s, but the tinny quality I got with some (that actually felt comfortable) explained to me perfectly why some reviewers think these phones a waste of money (either that or they've been sold a counterfeit). If you do happen to have 'non-standard ears' then Shure actually recommend consulting an audiologist who apparently will make make made-to-measure adapters for you. Do it - you'll notice the difference.
The other advice I'd give is to play around with your player's EQ control to find a setting that compliments the SE310s; the 'flat' response may not always give you the best quality. Adjust to your personal taste in the knowledge that the SE310s can handle as much bass as you can.
Finally, you can use the SE310s on public transport with utter confidence - not only will the insulation block out sound leakage from other, less considerate MP3 player users, but you can rest safe in the knowledge that your own pleasure will not infringe on anyone else; to others around you they are completely silent!

2 out of 5 stars nice product, shame about the leads   May 13, 2008

right im no nOOb to shures excellent range, and have used thier customer service many times because of problems they have with the leads. i originally bought the e2c and after 5 returns they upgraded me to the best set the e4, they lasted me about 6months in total before the dreaded cracked lead came about again (this same fault killed all my e2cs). anyways in jan i recieved my upgraded se310 from the e4c. the first thing i noticed was the cables are actually thinner than the previous models. i used them for about a month then put them away as i was off work for 2months. the time i used them the sound quality was fantastic, all the ranges were crystal clear and really showed what my archos player was capable of delivering at higher bitrate mp3s.
last week i took the headphones out and used them from tues to thurs. on fri i had lost the left channel AGAIN. i inspected the leads, low and behold the loop that goes over the top of the ear has cracked again and failed the headphones. shure have excellent after sales service which you cannot fault but i just wish they could fix this well documented annoying problem across most of the ranges. i also have a set of ultimate ears si3 and they have user replacable leads, if only shure could embrace this simple design then it would make the phones a lot more valuable imo.

5 out of 5 stars A true upgrade over SE210 and heavenly above Apple Stock headphones   May 21, 2009

I have used the following in-ear headphones:

Bose in ear (4 months)
Shure E2C (1 year)
Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 (1 year)
SE210 (6 months)
SE310 (Still using it...)

The SE310s are absolutely amazing and the bass drivers are a welcomed upgrade over the S210.

I expected a minor upgrade in quality of sound from the SE210s as they are great already but did not expect such an upgrade in sound quality.

The high, mid and low are a lot more clear and separated which makes a great and enjoyable listening experience.

Those who can not justify the extra dosh to upgrade from the SE210 to the SE310 - I would highly recommend you upgrading as I wish I had these from the start.

4 out of 5 stars Get the fitting right!   January 16, 2009

I recently bought the Se310 to replace a pair of E2Cs I had used on average 2.5 hours a day for two years commuting with my iPod. I found that the equivalent fitting from the E2C did not work with me in the SE310s - if you don't get a good seal, not only do you get noise from outside, which is not good on the tube network, but the sound is very thin with no base at all. I took a few days of exprimenting, and, although I thought I had small ear-holes, I have now ended up with the large sized foam sleeves. With the fitting right, the sound is superb - great clarity in the upper ranges, and good depth to the base. You won't get a thumping base, but you do hear what you're supposed to hear.

Other things I like compared to the E2C - the cable does not appear as brittle, and the case, although larger, seems to be better for the cable.

Well worth buying, highly recommended!
