5 out of 5 stars It's all in the earphones...   December 12, 2007

I recently invested in a Sony MP3 player. The reviews had talked about the sparkling sound, even in relation to the ipod, but I was left disappointed. I ditched the headphones it came with and switched to a pair of Sony MDR in-ear headphones. Still disappointed by the thin sound. Then I tried these. They are a lot of money for a set of earbuds (but by no means the most expensive). Wow! A full, round sound, natural across the frequencies, depth, clarity and detail. These have transformed my listening experience on the go and I cannot praise them highly enough.

Let me just start by saying these are great headphones. I've been using Shure's E2c in-ears for about 2 years, which i do like a lot, but I've been intrigued by these for a little while and picked up a pair from an Amazon Marketplace seller for about £50, bargain!

These sound so much more open than the Shures, and where the Shures might even sound a little confused on occasions, there is clarity here. It's probably not a fair comparison, price-bracket wise, but they are still mighty fine even compared to my Grado SR-60s.

I've read in places that these don't quite have the bass response as some were expecting- well, I would contradict that straight away. I've been listening to loads of things off my ipod (Mary J Blige, Jay Z, 2Pac, Goldfrapp, Madonna) and I am getting plenty here!

There is a little issue, there should be a better indicator of left and right, because a tiny L and R isn't that convenient, but that's a minor. I think you need to practise wearing these if you aren't used to in-ear monitors: it takes a little while but it's the only way to get the acoustics 'right' in your ear- I could never go back to rubbish ear buds.

In conclusion- these are great headphones!

For the record - If you read the supplied manual, you don't get problems (Guidelines mean this has to be a 'random potent quote'!)

These monitors are honestly the best I have ever tried (OK, compared to the 3-times more expensive UE ones these do lack bass, but if you can afford these, you know that tweaking the EQ is possible!). Shutting off background noise with the interchangeable tips means that you get the benefit of the sparkling sound quality from the really small yet well-designed drivers. Also, as a really active drummer I have NEVER had them fall out or had a problem wearing them for hours at a time. I've used them for well over a year now, and I am beginning to feel like part of me is missing if I'm NOT wearing them whilst recording or mixing (after all, they are designed primarily as reference monitors!)

A few bits of advice: 1) Buy the clear ones, these look the nicest and the clear cable cover is really funky.
2) Go to the Ultimate Ears site and look in the 'UE Video' section to find out a less obvious way to wear them (I mean, Rock stars don't have small rectangles sticking out of their ears!)
3) Equalising your ear pressure every so often and not sticking them in your ears too far helps the sound quality too (especially if you eat/travel/sing with them in)

It's like a party in your ears, and you're invited (with a discount VIP pass!)

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good   February 11, 2008

I previously had the Shure E2Cs and these are much better. They fit very well, bass and treble both great and soundstaging is noticeably better than on the more expensive Shure's. As for the thick cable I've never had a problem with that and they've never fallen out - even when running with them.

3 out of 5 stars Good headphones, problematic memory wire   December 20, 2007

I recently purchased a pair of these (the clear model) after quite a lot of research, to replace an aging pair of Sennheiser MX500's. I listen mainly to indie rock. It took a few days to get the right choice of plugs to fit my ears and I tried the various different ways of wearing them (detailed on their website).
However, after using them regularly for one week (wearing in the over-ear style), the memory wire in the right-hand headphone snapped. It's hugely disappointing that they only lasted one week. The headphones were very uncomfortable to wear with the broken wire, so I decided to return them for a refund as I don't feel entirely confident that the same problem won't happen again.
Sound quality was excellent once I had the right fit, especially the mid and treble. I too think the base was just a little light, but this was easily remedied by tweaking the sound settings on my MP3 player. So now my search continues!
